What is GlobeTrot?

GlobeTrot is a collaborative workspace where intermediate language learners can improve their proficiency by critiquing intentionally flawed translations.

Helping students collect, practice, and contextualize new words:

Use Lingro Extras to build your own word lists and flash cards from the words you've already clicked on, and then see how each word is used in its original context.

How To GlobeTrot:

Start by reading an article in Italian.

Then read its target text to identify any peculiar English translations.

Look up questionable words with the Lingro toolbar.

Edit translations in the righthand column by highlighting text and suggesting a correction.
Post your comments, corrections, insights and questions at the bottom in the comment box.

The Wonders of Translation

Di fronte a chi traduce, l'ammirazione spesso prende il senso dello stupore: il tal dei tali, come sa bene il tedesco! o l' inglese! o il greco! Ma che significa "sapere" una lingua che nonè la nostra? Certo, la lingua familiare, materna, la sappiamo quasi senza prenderne coscienza, e spesso malgrado a scuola ci insegnino grammatica e sintassi, continuiamo a intrattenere con essa una confidenza innocente, ingenua. Mentre con la lingua estranea, che impariamo, la relazione è sempre "riflessiva", e il possesso rimane precario, proprio perché insidiato dalla coscienza che quella lingua non ci appartiene.

In più, quando ci si trovi di fronte a un fenomeno di scrittore come Shakespeare, non solo ci ritroviamo in una lingua estranea - l' inglese elisabettiano, che non è affatto l' inglese che ci serve a viaggiare per il mondo - ma di fronte a una creazione linguistica che rispetto alla lingua inglese è unica. L' Amleto è un assoluto àpax. Capite? È una scoperta lapalissiana, ma insisto: non basta sapere l' inglese per scrivere Amleto. Bisogna essere Shakespeare. Come non basta sapere l' inglese per tradurlo.
